Centre for Rural Technology (CRT/N) in coordination with Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) and the World Bank (WB) Jointly Call for Product Development

The Government of Nepal announced in 2013 of its plan of “Clean Cooking Solutions for All” (CCS4ALL) by 2017. For this purpose, Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) has formed a dedicated unit with a joint multi-stakeholder platform. Prior to this, AEPC executed Energy Sector Assistance Program, ESAP (1999-2012) whereas post 2012 till 2017, National Rural & Renewable Energy Programme (NRREP) through Biomass Energy Subcomponent is being carried out. Major achievements in this initiative have been the installation of one million plus Improved Cookstoves (ICS) /Institutional ICS/Metallic ICS along with 11,000 trained Stove Masters whereas after the announcement of CS4ALL the ICS installation rate rose from 50,000 per year to 0.2 million per year. ICS installation in 2014/15 alone were 0.3 million. Furthermore, Nepal Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (NACC) has been established for effective coordination and synergy towards CCS4ALL.

NRREP is a single window program (2012-17) administered by the Alternate Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) and supported by the Government of Nepal and external development partners. Developing Improved Solutions for Cooking (DISC) is a technical assistance program, which is implemented by the World Bank with Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) funding under the country action track of SE4All initiative. The objectives of  DISC are (i) to complement and strengthen the NRREP initiatives in clean cooking sector and (ii) collaborating with Government of Nepal and relevant stakeholders, to develop an ‘Investment Prospectus’ for the clean cooking sector under the aegis of SE4All country action framework. Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MoEST) is a focal agency for the Energy Access Coordination Group at the NPC and AEPC is its secretariat.

Under the DISC initiative “Product Development and Labelling of Clean Cookstoves and Standardized Biomass Fuels for Nepali Market” is a project undertaken by CRT/N with support from the World Bank. The call for product development is intended to invite all stoves manufacturers, designers, implementers: individuals or organizations for further development of their products to be able to meet the national requirements and be listed in the Stoves Inventory/Repository.
